Dr. Laura: Why would a Witch bother?

Ok, I admit it. I listen to Dr. Laura. I have listened to her for about two years. Does this mean that I agree with her? Certainly not. While I have found myself nodding in agreement with her on some issues, I have often been angry enough to snap off the radio, vowing to never again listen to such crap! And then, like the rapt and persverse hypnotism of viewing an auto accident, I find myself turning the program back on and listening -- again.

I am not going to get into why I have this weird fascination with listening to Dr. Laura, nor am I interested in promoting her various media shows. What strikes me, is that there are people who are Pagan/Wiccan/Witches, who actually call up Dr. Laura and ask for her advice on family matters involving religious difficulties!

Now, if you have listened to the show for any period of time, you will probably pick up that Dr. Laura promotes religion. She talks about how it is important to have a good relationship with God and to have an active religious life. She talks all the time about doing good and right. Wow. I meet those criteria, although I think of the God and Goddess, instead of just God. Heck, I make those kind of mental adjustments all of the time. However, if you listen to her show long enough, you will soon realize that this REALLY isn't what she means. What she really wants is to promote ONLY Jewish and Christian religions. See, any other religion and you aren't really worshipping GOD. I mean, what about those ten commandments? You are breaking them if you aren't Christian or Jewish, and therefore are going against God's Laws. That means your religion is not a religion. (That idolatry one, particularly is a sticky wicket.)

Now, this is amazing to me. Any religion that doesn't follow the ten commandments is completely out? Your religious life just doesn't count otherwise? I think it's pretty amazing that Dr. Laura has that kind of pipeline to the Almighty that she can make those kinds of distinctions. Can't the ten commandments be easily translated into, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you? I mean, I wouldn't want to be killed or have stuff stolen from me. I wouldn't want my kids to disrespect me. If I have a personal relationship with a particular God/dess, they probably wouldn't like to be thrown aside on a whim - especially if they had been generous to me. (That thou should put no other Gods before me commandment. Hmmm... perhaps this means that you can worship other deities, you just have to put Jehovah first? *grin*)

As to the Pagans who call her up -- I wouldn't bother. Why would you want advice from someone who was completely hostile to your beliefs and way of life? Unless Dr. Laura's perspective becomes more tolerant and loving, she is going to continue to damage and harm the Pagan community - a community that promotes a deep relationship with God and an active, fulfilling, loving religious life. We are only interested in making the world a better place through right action.

And, Dr. Laura, how can you say, everyday, that you are doing the right thing by your continued persecution?
