Quarters/Directions

As a coven we did a guided meditation/journey that allowed us to meet each our personal guardians. After writing and reflecting on our experiences, each of us composed quarter callings & dismissals for using in personal ritual, or in some cases, with the coven as a whole...Other quarter callings were written specifically for a ritual.

As a coven we do things a bit differently than others. It stems from the very earliest beginnings of the group and the tradition from which it sprang - Grail Quest Wicca. In general our all of our opening rites (circle casting and blessing, quarters, etc.) are done widdershins (counter-clockwise). We go against the apparent direction of the sun to take us out of normal time and space. Our closing rites, then, are done deosil (clock-wise) to put us back into alignment with normal time and space. We also change the starting direction for each ritual to align ourselves with the seasons using the following pattern:

Litha & Lughnassad - South
Mabon & Samhain - West
Yule & Imbolg - North
Ostara & Beltane - East

We know that this differs quite a bit from other groups. But it is our tradition! You will see an example of this in the Imbolg Quarters.

Calling the Sentinels

I call to you, Sentinel of the East!
Perceptive Hawk-man, perpetually navigating the winds of change!
Come forth from your perch high atop sheer mountain cliffs
 reaching into luminous clouds filled with currents and touched by the stars.
Guard well the energies of decisiveness, clarity and mental insight.
So mote it be!

I call to you, Sentinel of the South!
Passionate Dragon-man, forever destroying the old and forging the new!
Come forth from beneath the shifting sands of arid desert dunes
radiating heat from the solar disk filled with the forces of illumination.
Guard well the energies of creativity, lust and determination.
So mote it be!

I call to you, Sentinel of the West!
Patient Mermaid, infinitely flowing throughout the tides of time.
Come forth from the depths of the blue-green ocean
caressed by the moon's waxing and waning filled with the rhythm of life.
Guard well the energies of emotion, intuition and love.
So mote it be!

Releasing the Sentinels

Sentinel of the East,
I give you thanks for protecting the circle.
May I always find clarity through the harmonious balancing of energies.
Blessed be!

I give you thanks for protecting the circle.
May I always find creativity through the harmonious balancing of energies.
Blessed be!

Sentinel of the West,
I give you thanks for protecting the circle.
May I always find intuition through the harmonious balancing of energies.

Calling the Elements

I call to the elements of the South....to the dry heat of the desert that burns under a flaming orange sun...to the courage of the lion whose red mane leaps in flames about his face...to the energy that burns within me.

I call to the West...to the deep blue-green waters that rush the shore...to the dolphin that weaves in and out of the purple sea, daring to explore the deepest waters...to the white steed twisting and leaping our of the waves as they crash towards the shore...to the awesome power that carries me forward spiraling and gasping, into a future I dare to meet.

I call to the North..to the fields of winter grasses and the woods, blanketed in moss and the dry leaves of summer past...I call to the direction of mysteries...to the secrets held aloft by the jeweled tapestry of black tree limbs held against the night sky...I follow the silent trail of the stag as it weaves its way through the dark of the forest...I call to the stag who has mastered the power of silence.
