Ohio Summer

The air hangs hot and heavy overhead.

As I move thru' muggy molecules
Form melts like Oz's Western Witch;
Not Dorothy-doused, but weather-worn.
Great and Powerful Humidity Rules!
I sweat and flush at fever pitch;
My nerves are frayed and torn.
Clothing clings to curves of back and thighs-
Cleverly creating near-nudeness by their drape.
(I guess I'd stay indoors if I were wise!)

The air hangs hot and heavy overhead.

Moist smears line vinyl benches,
Marking booths where we have been
Consuming cool, crisp salads in a darkened room.
(Will weariness and weather win,
And Consumer be Consumed?)
We now return to work-day trenches.
Blasts of air blow hotly in
As double doors wing back,
Blazing, radiating from sun-lit well-worn track:
From sizzling concrete sidewalks,
       pitchy, paving, baked red bricks.

The air hangs hot and heavy overhead.

"Dog Days" lack delight - yes even for the dogs!
They're prone, panting on a patch
      of paw-scratched earth,
Still as statues, logy as logs,
Moving only for the fly,
Who merits tail-twitches and ear-flicks.
Collecting fleas and ticks,
Or barking brief "Bewares" to passers-by:
- No energy for anger, nor true mirth.

The air hangs hot and heavy overhead.

Samhain

Samhain's chill, the autumn bonfire
Goddess calling, come to me.
Hecate in gleaming moonfire
is the shadow I can see.

Harvest time, the golden pumpkin
gleaming when the lights are low.
One last night of celebration
fore the wintry chill wind blows.

Horned God, the Stag of Darkness,
Kernunnos shall reign tonight.
Underworld, the land of passage,
where the mortal soul takes flight.

Now the hidden veil between the
shadowed realm and here grows thin.
Let us say farewell to those that
through the year have gone with Him.

Samhain's chill, the God and Goddess
bring us laughter and a smile.
Guide us through the land of living
pleased to stay a little while.
