Music

We have many talented musicians in our group. Sabrae and Silverwind both sing. Silverwind also plays guitar. Sabrae plays the harp, drums and various keyboard instruments. Ivan plays his big conga drum and Rock plays the tuba!

This page has been broken down into four pages to reduce the loading time of the midi files. Also provided here is a complete list of the music available for ease in navigating these pages.

Music Notes

Music is a great way to set the mood of your ritual or meditative space. It can be relaxing, help raise energy,  create tension and grant release. Music is important in ritual, whether live or recorded.

This may sound rather extreme, but music can make or break a ritual. Using the wrong music can be devastating. It can be distracting. It can evoke unwanted energies. So using music takes time and forethought. For example: if you are doing a water-type of ritual, you certainly wouldn't want music that created fire pictures in your head. The correct selection of music should help you focus. It should enhance the imagery you are trying to create. You can also improvise your own music. (Alas! Sabrae has done this on occasion with good results, but after the ritual couldn't remember any of the music!)

And music doesn't always have to be about singing. It can be instrumental tonal music or percussive music. Percussive music (drumming) is nearly an absolute if you are planning on doing any kind of journeying. And if you are working alone, you probably will want to puchase a drumming tape, made especially for journeying. Music can be especially important if you are doing your rituals in an area where there is a lot of distracting background noise. We like to use Celtic harp music (on CD) for a nice background with indoor rituals. However, if you are working in the woods, the sounds that Nature provides are quite wonderful without any extra human adornment.

Creating Your Own Music

When singing or playing your own music, spend some time experimenting. Vary the tempo (speed) and the dynamics (loudness/softness). See how these change the flow of energy. If you are trying to get your energy to peak, starting slowly and softly and gradually increasing the speed and loudness can be very effective. If you are doing a ritual chant, then having a song leader who slightly slows the tempo the last time through can be a good way of letting people know that the chant is ending. It takes practice, but it's worth it!

If you are going to be doing a ritual with other folks, you may want to spend some time teaching them the music before the ritual starts. Depending on how much music there is and how complicated the lyrics are, providing a lyric or song sheet can be helpful. (Although sometimes this can be distracting if people are trying to read lyrics in low light!) Also, if you are doing your music a capella (without instruments) try to have a way to pick the beginning notes so that your chant is singable by most of the group. Nothing breaks the mood like trying to do a chant where everybody is squeaking on the high notes or growling on the low notes because you didn't start in the right key. A pitch pipe can be a good investment if you are concerned about these issues. Pitch pipes are readily available at most instrumental music shops and are not too expensive.

 Rounds and Chants

Rounds and chants are a great way to create a rhythmic, trance-like state. Once learned, chants can provide an easy channel for moving energy. Rounds can be used like chants, however, rounds are a very simple way to create complex harmonies containing tension and resolution. The tension/release is a very good way to raise energy. If your group is "musically challenged" use the rounds as chants instead.

Songs & Lyrics

Full fledged songs are hard to come by and take even more time to turn into midi files. So rather than wait and post these with the music, they are being posted without. The lyrics themselves are very nice. Hopefully we will be able to get to the midis sometime.
