What is Magick?

As a coven we perform magick. Usually this occurs during Esbat rituals. We use the "k" at the end to distinguish this from stage or illusionary magic.

Magick has been defined as the changing of consciousness at will. Most people think that magick is something that happens when a witch twitches her nose a la Bewitched. If it were that easy, I think most people would want to be witches!

Witches work at aligning themselves with the free flow of the universe. This can be very difficult because the things that we want are not often the things that we need. And there is a world of difference between the two. If you want a particular event to occur, then you need to find a way to make it happen that isn't battling the flow of the universe. Sometimes changing streams or finding a different current will lead you to the place you want to be as opposed to trying to force yourself upstream. And like it or not, life decisions made earlier will come back to haunt you and prevent you from what you really want later in life.

"Be careful what you wish for, you will get it - but probably not the way you thought you would!"

Sometimes we think we know what is best for us - specifically -  and we put all of our time and energy into making it manifest. Try leaving things a bit more open. That way the universe, God or Goddess can bring what is best for you. It is important at the end of all magickal acts to ask the God and/or Goddess when granting your desires to take into consideration what would be best for all concerned.

Methods of Magick

We think that most magick is broken down into two parts - the area/content of the magick and the magickal technique used. The area is the type of magick done - perhaps a healing spell. The technique is how the spell will be carried out - say through candles. So I might be doing a candle healing spell.

You aren't limited by just one technique or area. Perhaps the candle you are using is an figure candle, made in the shape of a person. Now you are utilizing aspects of image magick as well. Sometimes the more connections you can make within your spell, the better it will be - but only if you really understand the connections you are making.

The Ethics of Magick

We have not included any specific spells here. Why not? Because spellwork is best when it comes from the person doing it. Following a recipe spell (and you can find these in every book and all over the net) just aren't going to be effective/affective unless you have the proper visualization and intent behind it.

Doing manipulative magick is a witchy no-no. This includes hate spells, love spells, attack spells, etc. Love spells, you say? Well, if you are doing a spell aimed at specific person, then you are doing manipulative magick. Do you really want someone because you put a spell on them? Where's your witchy pride? Remember, what you put out comes back to you threefold. Do you really want to be in love with someone three times more than they are in love with you? "But" - you may be exclaiming - "you have Love spells listed above! Aren't you being hypocritical?"

Not really. Because if you want to do a spell asking the universe/God/Goddess to bring you the perfect mate WITHOUT visualizing a specific person, and then ask the universe/God/Goddess to only do it so that it is good for ALL involved, you aren't manipulating anyone. It takes a bit of extra work - but nobody said that it was easy.

Binding spells are in that nebulous grey area. If someone is hurting you, than there are things that you can do to protect yourself. You could bind the person, but it doesn't always last, and you end up putting more and more energy into that person. (And is that what you really want to do - spend more time and energy on someone who is being terrible to you?) Now, not wanting to be yelled at (or sneered at) for being white-light-foo-foo- answer this question - if you really believe in the law of threefold return, why would you think that all of a sudden it doesn't operate in these situations? Wouldn't a binding on someone else then bind you three times as much? If you are doing protective magick or healing magick on yourself - then you don't have to worry about rebound. Try to follow this rule:

"When in doubt - don't do it!"

This will undoubtedly tick some people off who think that magick is all about screwing over that person you hate. Sure, you can do it. But just because you can doesn't make it right. And just so you have been warned, it will come right back and #$&@! you up. Really. So we wouldn't advise it, tempting as it may be.
